What is a Content Management System (CMS)? PDF Print E-mail

If you have a website that needs to be updated frequently, but you know little about writing web pages, then you need some other way of modifying the content. A Content Management System (CMS) provides the website owner with a series of pages and control panels, allowing the text or graphics of specific areas of the website to be easily replaced. It can be as simple as an updatable paragraph of text on a single page, or more complicated, such as forms to allow stock updates, or allow alteration to the style of the website.

Pages can be edited in much the same way as using a word processor and designated sections of website content can be updated in this manner while still preserving the website's structure and style. The website is updated immediately in real time.

Content Management can be taken a lot further to:

  • allow end-user control of menu items,
  • give publishing options allowing review of submitted items before they go live
  • provide website visitor registration
  • include facilities for banner management
  • allow mass email to registered users

There are a growing number of open-source packages available to web-developers that provide CMS frameworks. When choosing one, we consider how long it's been around & the size of the community that develop and use it. If these are large, then the product will most likely continue into the future - which allows websites to be upgraded easily and keep up with technology without starting from scratch all the time.

We specialize in customizing the Joomla and WordPress CMSes. Further information about the platforms we use in development can be found on our page about development frameworks.

Why should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7? Microsoft has redesigned Internet Explorer from the ground up, with better security, new capabilities, and a whole new interface. Many changes resulted from the feedback of millions of users who tested prerelease versions of the new browser. The most compelling reason to upgrade is the improved security.
